Importance of PROTEIN in CHILDREN & its sources | Dr. Mahishma K
"Protein is an essential food that a child will require especially because children have to grow and develop. So the protein is required for their growth their development cell repair growth of new cells and also it will boost their immunity. Protein is an essential element that is required in their diet along with carbohydrates. So some of the sources of protein is as usual again eggs meat sources mushrooms, tofu all these contain excessive proteins. One of the important protein sources will be legumes they contain a lot of protein as our country developed and we are going through changes in economy everybody's income sources have increased. So we are not seeing those very severe protein deficiency cases that have become very less over the years. But severe protein deficiency is a very dangerous condition and it will lead to a lot of problems and also morbidity in the child. So we are not seeing those cases now because of change in economy also. However mild protein deficiencies are being seen even now and they can be very abstract symptoms like poor concentration in the class, always fatigue. Fatigue is one common complaint which they may raise. There may be brittle nails, hair can become brittle. All these are signs of mild protein deficiency which we have to identify and a good protein that diet will help in solving these problems"
CHILDHOOD OBESITY-Cause & Prevention|Weight Loss | Dr. Mahishma K
"This is one of the commonest problems that is arising past 5 to 6 years. There is an increasing Trend in children becoming overweight or obese and most of this problem is because of their sedentary lifestyle lack of physical activity and sporting activity in children. Especially older children as become older there is increased pressure to study and green time is increased. So there is lack of physical activity along with this there is an increase in consumption of junk food aerrated foods. So all these are causing a trend of increase in obese or overweight children's. So how do we avoid this is always everyday physical activity and exercise is a must in children which it will also not only help in reducing the weight it will also help in their overall growth and development of the child to the physical activity is a must secondly avoiding junk food and aerated drinks in decreasing the salt intake. Salt intake we do not necessarily keep a notice or check on the salt intake but whatever processed foods or packaged foods we eat contain a lot of salt because it is used as a preservative. So keeping an eye on limiting the salt intake and excessive sugar intake will help in reducing their weight and keep checking their weight lastly adequate sleep will help in having a good routine and good appetite too.So limiting the screen time is most important to have a good sleep"
Vitamin D deficiency in Children – Signs, Symptoms & Treatment | Dr. Mahishma K
"So vitamin D deficiency in children can start at a very early age which we call as rickets. But along with vitamin D deficiency most of them will also present with signs and symptoms of calcium deficiency too. So signs and symptoms will include as early as delayed in teething teeth will start erupting at a later age there will be delay in walking you can usually compare it with a sibling his elder child would have walked at a early age but the younger sibling might having a delay in walking. In more pronounced cases we do also see deformities in the knees. Usually there will be curbed knees. These are all signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency . Other changes will be there will be poor weight gain that almost the growth will be stunted and older children will complain of muscle pains and bone pains especially at night. How do we treat this and how do we avoid this is a good amount of sunshine always for vitamin D deficiency it will help. So sunshine with physical activity. So allowing them to have a daily physical activity especially sports will help in avoiding vitamin D deficiency. Along with that good diet and nutrition. Some of sources of vitamin D along with sunshine is sundried mushrooms, milk dairy products like cheese. Some fatty fish like salmon mackarel. Sardines will also help in getting good source of vitamin D"
Which food is good for Children's brain? | Dr. Mahishma K
"We always know and speak highly that children will absorb things better will learn quickly than adults. So these children at this age will require a lot more nutrients and good nutrients to help in brain development. So some of the foods which will help in brain development or now it is called fashionably as super foods or eggs. All kinds of seafish actually they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and coline, iodine and zinc. All of these will help in brain development along with this almonds and green leafy vegetables will help in brain development. Coming to the next question of whether vegetarian children will require supplementation. It depends upon what kind of diet the child is following suppose the child is on dairy food foods and eggs are included in his diet. Usually they do not require any supplementation at all because they will be getting all the nutrients from dairy products and eggs. However if they are off dairy products then you will need to supplement them with milk-based alternatives like soya milk, almond milk. Soya milk will again be an excellent alternative. The idea is to get nutrients from the food mostly and to avoid supplementation for children. So if you're avoiding a particular kind of food like dairy then supplement them with plant-based products the second common thing which will arise for vegetarian children is vitamin B12 deficiency. Because most of the vitamin B12 from diet is animal based so it will be difficult to source or vegetarian based. There are foods which are rich in vitamin B12 which you can get from vegetarian sources also like tofu almonds apples blueberries are all rich in vitamin B12. So the idea is to get variety into the diet and also to source foods which can help in supplementation of B12 for them and also plant based. Otherwise specifically needed or medically needed we need to supplement them with B12 or vitamin D. Otherwise just the diet and alternatives to diet will help them compensate"
How to handle Picky eater kids? Tips for parents of fussy kids | Dr. Mahishma K
"So what milk and how much milk definitely how much milk your child should take depends upon the age of your child. So for a child about 1 to 2 years of age he'll require about 2 to three cups of milk per day. And from 2 years onwards till 8 years of age not more than 2 cups or 2 and a half cups per day will be sufficient. However from Pre-Teen age to teenage they will require more amount of milk because of their growing needs and growth spurts. So up to 3 cups per day is acceptable what milk should a child consume. Definitely below 6 months of age we always advocate mother's milk and nothing else. From 6 months of age till about 2 years of age a child can be given breast milk along with a regular diet which he'll be introduced at 6 months of age. From 2 years of age you can start your child with cow milk. We do not recommend Buffalo milk below one year of age because it'll be thicker in consistency and it will be difficult for digestion for your child. However also we do not recommend any plant-based milk products like soy milk, almond milk or oat milk for children below 5 years of age simply because these milks will not have all the essential nutrients that a cow milk will provide for them. However if your child is medically in need of such milk products or if he is taking it by choice then you can always go for soy milk because it is an excellent alternative when compared to other products. One last thing I would like to add is we do not recommend giving any flavoured milk because it's just excess sugars for the child and also we do not recommend them giving any lowfat milk or skimmed milk we always recommend whole milk for a child especially below 5 years of age"
DEWORMING IN KIDS- Importance & how frequently? | Dr.Mahishma K
"Deworming is a process of getting your intestinal worms killed. Children are more at risk for intestinal warms because of their play activities they may play with bare hands and bare feet especially bare feet. Soil will be contaminated most of the times they may come in contact with toys which are contaminated or they may come in contact with fruits and vegetables which are contaminated with soil and are not cleaned properly. So through the mouth these intestinal worms and these eggs will reach the intestines they will live as parasites. So if these intestinal worms are left untreated most of the children will get diarrhea malnutrition and anemia. So deworming that is killing of intestinal worms is a necessary treatment for children. We ideally recommend deworming at least every 6 months. But at least once a year is recommended for all children"

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

What is NICU?

NICU stands for newborn intensive care unit. This is a place in a hospital that provides around-the-clock care to sick or premature babies. It has doctors and paramedical staff who have special training and equipment to give your baby the best possible care.

What is the difference between ICU and NICU?

ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit and is designed to cater to critically ill adults. NICU, on the other hand, is designed to cater to newborn babies who need critical treatment.

What is the difference between PICU and NICU?

PICU stands for Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. In the PICU infants and children, up to 17 years old are treated by doctors. In a NICU, only newborns are provided critical care.

What is Level III NICU?

A level III NICU cares for very small babies, infants born as early as 27 to 30 weeks or very sick newborns. Level 3 NICUs have a wide variety of staff on-site, including neonatologists, neonatal nurses, and respiratory therapists who are available 24 hours a day.

Which babies need Level III NICUs?

Infants born at less than 32 weeks gestational age and weighing less than 1500 grams as well as critically ill newborns of any gestational age and birth weight, should be taken care of in a level III NICU.

What are some common health conditions babies have in the NICU?

Some common conditions treated at NICU are Anaemia, Breathing problems, Apnea, Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), Pneumonia, Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), Bradycardia, Coarctation of the aorta, Heart valve abnormalities, Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), Septal defects, Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the great arteries, Retinopathy of Prematurity, Sepsis, Macrosomia, Jaundice, Gastroschisis, Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and so on.

What tests are done in the NICU?

Some common tests done in the NICU are blood tests, CT scans, echocardiograms, ECG, hearing tests, MRI, ROP exams, ultrasound, X-rays, urine tests and so on.

How can I breastfeed my baby in the NICU?

It depends on the baby’s medical condition and how well they can suck and swallow. If your baby can directly breastfeed, that is the best option. If your baby cannot breastfeed directly, you can feed her breast milk that you pump from your breasts using a bottle. Some babies may need a feeding tube and you can feed your pumped breast milk using that tube.

For babies who are very small or sick, the baby can only receive nutrients through an intravenous line (IV).

What is newborn jaundice?

Newborn or neonatal jaundice is very common and causes yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Other symptoms of newborn jaundice can include dark, yellow urine and pale stools. The symptoms of newborn jaundice usually develop 2 days after the birth and tend to get better without treatment by the time the baby is about 2 weeks old.

It is caused by the build-up of bilirubin in the blood. Jaundice is common in newborn babies because babies have a high number of red blood cells in their blood, which are broken down and replaced frequently. Also, a newborn baby's liver is not fully developed, so it's less effective at removing the bilirubin from the blood.

My baby’s skin is peeling off. Is that ok?

When your baby is in the womb, it is covered in a baby moisturiser called vernix. After delivery, this layer slowly wears off and it appears that the baby’s skin is “peeling” or “moulting”. This shedding of old skin is completely normal and there is no need to apply any lotions or creams.
