Best Nutrition/Diet for the Mom and Baby

Cloudnine’s Department of Nutrition & Dietetics aims to provide the best and most relevant nutritional advice to expectant mothers, new moms, babies, kids and teens. Promoting the concept of healthy eating is an integral part of the advice given at Cloudnine.

A nutritious, balanced diet consisting of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins is essential for a healthy life. The benefits of good nutrition go beyond weight management. It helps in reducing the risk of diseases, reducing high BP, lowering bad cholesterol, minimising treatment side effects and complications, maintaining strength and energy, increasing immunity and improving overall well-being.

At Cloudnine, we evaluate your nutritional status based on various parameters such as anthropometric measurements, biochemical indices, clinical examinations and dietary history and then recommend a customised diet suiting your medical, social and physiological condition.

Our  Nutrition & Dietetics team comprises accredited practising dietitians and expert nutritionists who go the extra mile to understand the specific requirements of your body.

Nutrition during pregnancy & maternity

At Cloudnine, we understand the distinct nutritional requirements of women in the different phases of life – especially before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, when the nutritional vulnerability is greatest. Our Nutrition & Dietetics consultants ensure that as an expecting or new mom, you have nutritious diets that are fundamental to your and your little one’s well-being.

Similarly, before pregnancy, our Nutrition & Dietetics consultants work with you to recommend nutritious and safe diets to establish sufficient reserves for pregnancy.

Weaning & nutrition

Weaning is the process by which babies who are fully reliant on milk are introduced to solid foods at around 6 months of age. By this age, your baby needs more iron and other nutrients like Vitamin D and Vitamin C that milk alone cannot give and thus the process of gradual introduction to a wide range of non-milk foods so that by the age of one, your baby will be joining in family meals.

Cloudnine has a special programme called ‘Starting Solids’ for babies starting with solid food for the first time. Know more about the course >>

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Why is nutrition during pregnancy important?

Good nutrition helps you handle the extra demands on your body as your pregnancy progresses. Making healthy food choices during your pregnancy will help you give the right nutrients for your baby to develop properly.

What are the food groups that should be part of a balanced diet?

The five food groups that should be part of a balanced diet are grains, fruits, vegetables, protein and dairy. In addition, you should add healthy fats to your diet too. Keeping yourself well-hydrated is also of utmost importance during pregnancy.

Why should I take prenatal vitamins?

Prenatal vitamins supply the additional vitamins and minerals you need during pregnancy.

How many prenatal vitamins should I take each day?

We recommend you consult your ob-gyn or your nutritionist for the dosage of prenatal vitamins.

What is folic acid?

Folic acid, also known as folate, is a B vitamin that helps to form DNA and RNA and is involved in protein metabolism. It is also needed to produce healthy red blood cells and is critical during periods of rapid growth, such as during pregnancy and foetal development. A wide variety of foods naturally contain folate, but the form that is added to foods and supplements, folic acid, is better absorbed by our bodies. Good sources of folate include dark green leafy vegetables, beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, fresh fruits, fruit juices, whole grains, liver, seafood and eggs. The need for folate increases during pregnancy as it plays a role in the development of cells in the foetus and in preventing major birth defects of the foetus' brain and spine called neural tube defects (NTDs).

How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?

It depends on your health and your body mass index (BMI) before you were pregnant. If you were underweight before pregnancy, you should gain more weight. If you were overweight or obese before pregnancy, you should gain less weight. The amount of weight gain also depends on your trimester.

When can I start solid food for the baby?

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended and crucial for the first 6 months of life. Then depending on the baby’s readiness, you can slowly introduce solid food to the baby along with your breastmilk.

To help parents introduce solid food to their babies, Cloudnine has a unique course called 'Starting Solids.’ Learn more >>

What are some first foods I can give to my baby?

The first food that the baby eats should be liquid to soft inconsistency. Homemade cereal and dal-based porridge, strained fruits and vegetable puree are some options.

How can I check if my baby has any food allergies?

Some babies may be intolerant to certain foods. To check that, introduce only one new item at a time and keep an eye on any allergies that the baby may show.

When can I start giving water to my baby?

Exclusively breastfed babies do not need water. Water should be introduced once weaning feeds are started at 6 months of age.
