World Prematurity Day 2023 I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"World Prematurity Day, observed on November 17th annually, raises awareness about the challenges preterm babies and their families face. The day serves as a platform to unite individuals and organisations in advocating for improved care and prevention strategies for preterm infants"
What are causes of Neonatal Jaundice? I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"Jaundice is caused by quite a few reasons in babies and the commonest reason what we call is the physiological jaundice which means that the jaundice happens in a normal newborn baby and there may not be any other reason than the baby being abnormal or liver being immature or they may be getting more blood from the mother. But sometimes we call it as a pathological jaundice, which means if the jaundice happens before 24 hours of age or if the jaundice is much more higher level, then it is called as a pathological jaundice. Then we have to investigate the baby"
What are possible complications of Neonatal Jaundice? I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"Jaundice can cause problems if it is not treated. If the level of the jaundice goes very high then babies can get jaundice which can damage the brain. That is called kernicterus. Kernicterus cause jaundice to deposit in certain parts of the brain which can develop to babies causing deafness and babies developing upward gaze and mental retardation. So this is the preventable cause. If you treat the baby with high jaundice the babies should not have any of those problems"
Are investigations for Neonatal Jaundice mandatory? I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"Jaundice does not necessarily need investigations. Most babies have what is called as physiological jaundice. Normally what we do is we check the jaundice for the babies at 36 to 48 hours of age because all babies get jaundice. The reason we test at 36 to 48 hours is it gives a predictive value whether the baby needs treatment or not. Based on that you will assess of the baby needing treatment and also at the same time we do a blood group of the baby. So that determine the blood group incompatibility with the mother and the baby. So in that case we do those basic investigations for babies. If the jaundice becomes pathological, then obviously we need to rule out all other causes like urine infections, G6PD deficiency, thyroid and various other problem. So the routine normal baby jaundice does not necessarily need major investigations"
What is Neonatal Jaundice? I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"Neonatal jaundice refers to the jaundice in newborn babies which a lot of babies gets. Jaundice comes in the neonatal life because of different reasons compared to the jaundice that occurs in later life. It is limited to babies in the first month of life"
What is Newborn Screening & its importance? I Dr. R Kishore Kumar
"Newborn screening is screening of all newborns which may not be obvious looking at the babies. So screening has been done in most countries for the last 50 years. The reason is all reasons are examined physically. Sometimes biochemically and enzymatically babies may or may not be normal or something may not be distinguished by just a physical examination. That is called screening. So screening will help in detecting babies with biochemical or cardiovascular or enzymatic deficiencies which may not be obvious clinically"
