Will my daughter develop anemia once she starts getting her period? I Dr. Shirin Venkatramani
The girl usually gets her periods at about 11 to 13 years of age, and it all depends on her previous nutritional status, if it was poor, or was adequate. Just getting periods would not send her into a state of anemia. If the periods are heavy, as they might be, at puberty or if the nutritional status is poor or if there is a worm infestation is there or any other causes of anemia might be, she my become anemic and it is worth taking one consultation with your gynecologist. In case there are some abnormalities if you have experienced yourself as a woman, and you find them as abnormal, then you could take the girl to the gynecologist but per say just because she has got her periods, she does not become anemic.
What causes blood in urine during pregnancy? Can it affect pregnancy? I Dr. Shirin Venkatramani
Blood in urine has to be differentiated whether it is actually in the urine itself or whether there is any bleeding from the vagina because these can be sometimes confused and both are very serious symptoms, it is known as hematuria when the blood comes in the urine or you get a report that says red blood cells in the urine which could be because of a contamination for the vagina. Therefore you have to be clear and let the doctor examine you properly and see whether it is the urine or your vaginal bleeding and there are serious causes of hematuria, that is blood in the urine, such as a stone in the kidney or anywhere in the renal tract or anywhere in the kidney or severe urinary infection. All of these need to be addressed very urgently and completely before we dismiss such a symptom, plus the vaginal bleeding is also a cause for concern in pregnancy.
Can you ovulate and still not get pregnant? I Dr. Shirin Venkatramani
Can a woman ovulate and still not get pregnant. There are many causes for infertility or subfertility. We do not call it infertility anymore because of the technical advances however just because a woman ovulates it doesn’t mean that she is fertile because there is along tract that the sperm has to undertake to fertilize the egg. So there is the cervix, the uterus, the tubes and rendezvous of the fertilization takes place at the ampullary part of the tube. So if the tube is blocked, this is the most common cause, of anovulatory infertility and ofcourse the sperm has to be there is adequate numbers. So ovulation is not the only criteria which would say that the woman could be fertile.
Can I get pregnant 2 days before my period? I Dr. Shirin Venkatramani
Ovulation happens in a 28 day cycle on the 14th day, that is 14 days prior to the expected period. However the sperm lives in the vaginal tract for 3 days, that is 72 hours and the ovum lives for 48 hours. Therefore there is an overlap and the fertile period is considered one week before this period. However there are women who ovulate frequently like rabbits and rabbits are the most fertile animals, and they ovulate during the period of copulation. So no period during the cycle can be considered as absolutely safe and there is this freak ovulation that can occur and this period and that this period could have been a delayed period and the ovulation was to happen later. I wouldn’t bet that a girl cannot get pregnant simply because she had an intercourse 2 days prior to the expected period.

Symptoms of Pregnancy in 9th Month I Dr. Shirin Venkatramani
The 9th month of pregnancy is a really delicate period because that is the time premature labour might occur or you may have leaking or sometimes we get patients that she can’t hold urine at all. This is the leakage of liquor and this should be taken seriously. The discomfort of being in the 9th month, as everybody knows is backache, improper gait and walking, tiredness, fatigue, breathlessness, indigestion, constipation. But what is serous is that if you start getting period pain, or if you get leaking or if you get any bleeding, these are symptoms that have to be taken seriously in pregnancy because you might be going into early labour.
