Can Laser Treatment help in Reducing the Post-pregnancy Stretch Marks?

‍

Pregnancy can throw many curveballs at the moms-to-be, and post-pregnancy stretch marks are just one of them. Stretch marks are nothing but fine glossy, white streaks formed in the areas prone to fat accumulation like the buttocks, breast, hips, abdomen, arms, tummy and thighs. Even though they are very common, they can make you feel conscious and uncomfortable.

‍

Thankfully there are aesthetic treatments available to take care of it.

‍

‍What Causes Stretch Marks during Pregnancy?

‍

‍Stretch marks are formed when your belly expands suddenly to accommodate the growing baby inside. This expansion results in breaking down of the elastic fibers present underneath the skin to enhance the elasticity of the skin which causes the glossy, white streaks.

‍

Other than this there are many reasons behind the formation of stretch marks, they are:

‍

  • The elevating level of progesterone during pregnancy decreases the protein levels in the body which results in pigmenting the mother’s skin when pregnant.
  • The sudden weight gain during pregnancy results in the skin to stretch resulting in stretch marks.
  • The accumulation of fat under the dermis during pregnancy results in the formation of stretch marks.
  • Over pulling or stretching of the skin due to hormonal changes during the pregnancy leads to breaking or tearing of the dermis which develops into stretch marks.

Can Laser Treatment help in reducing Stretch Marks?

‍

‍

‍

Yes, laser stretch is very effective in treating stretch marks or striae. It is a laser resurfacing procedure which works by removing the outermost layer of the skin and restructuring the overlying skin. In this process, a concentrated amount of light is used to encourage new cells to grow.

‍

There are two types of lasers used for skin resurfacing treatment; they are:

‍

  • Ablative lasers (CO2, Erbium YAG): In this process, the entire (targeted) upper layer of the skin is destroyed, and the newly growing skin tissues are smoother in appearance and texture.

‍

  • Non-ablative lasers (Alexandrite, Fraxel): In this treatment process the upper layer of the skin is left intact while the underlying areas of the skin’s surface are targeting to promote collagen growth.

‍

Remember that laser treatment cannot help you get rid of stretch marks entirely, but it makes the striae smoother, which reduces their appearance.

‍How long does the effect last?

‍

‍The effect of the treatment will last depending on how well you take care of your skin. Also, there are different cases; sometimes stretch marks need just a single ablative laser treatment while other cases need multiple treatments (between one and six non-ablative laser treatments). But, once the skin starts appearing completely smooth and normal (after completing all the required session), the result can last for years.

‍

‍Is Laser Treatment safe?

‍

‍Yes, laser treatment is a non-invasive method of removing stretch marks which is very safe and has no or minimal potential to cause any injury. It is also an easy, fast, long-lasting and effective way of getting rid of those ugly stretch marks.
